초록

이 연구는 중국에 자녀를 두고 남한으로 입국한 탈북여성의 가족이산 경험을 ‘초국가적 어머니’라는 개념을 활용하여 탈북여성의 초국가적 어머니 선택 동기와 초국가적 어머니 역할과 갈등이 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 이 연구의 자료는 중국에서 혼인하고 자녀를 출산하였으며, 자녀를 남겨두고 홀로 남한에 입국하였던 기혼여성 다섯 명의 구술생애사이다. 구술자와 연구자는 5년여 동안 지속적인 만남을 유지하면서 라포를 형성했으며, 구술 내용을 녹취하여 분석하였다. 연구결과는 첫째, 구술자들이 초국가적 어머니를 선택 하게 된 동기는 신분 불안과 시민권획득이 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 구술자들은 초국가적 어머니로서 ‘먼 거리 어머니 역할(long distance mothering)’을 하고 있으며, 죄책감으로 인한 모성 갈등을 겪고 있다. 셋째, 이들은 자녀와 헤어져 살 수밖에 없는 초국가적 어머니가 됨을 받아들이면서 오히려 자신의 어머니 역할을 재구성하고, 복합적 가족 형성을 하는 등 남한 사회에서의 정착·적응 생활을 만들어 가고 있다.

This study focus on the phenomenon of North Korean women defectors transnational mother experiences. Based on the long term fieldwork and oral life history interview with 5 North Korean women defectors who put a child in China and came to South Korea alone, this study examined the reason why and how to be transnational mother, transnational mother’s role conflict, and resettlement affection in South Korea through the concept of ‘transnational mother'. The results are as follows. First, the identification and repatriation to North Korea of Chinese police impact and motivate to became a transnational mother. Second, North Korean transnational mothers do the 'long distance mother role’ while maintaining the child's in China, and suffer physical, emotional transnational mother’s pains. The transnational mothering is supported the activities such as phone calls, sending gifts on birthday, tuition assistance. Third, North Korean women defectors accept the transnational mothering. They are reconstructed their mothering role. They make their own new life like marriage, university study, and so on. The North Korean women's transnational mothers experience in this study reveals the diversity of North Korean women defectors.
